How this calculation works
Base = goods − qualifying discount + taxable shipping. GST/HST = base × GST/HST rate / 100. PST/QST = base × provincial rate / 100 (no compounding).
Amounts use two decimal places. VAT extraction rounds the net price and uses the remainder as VAT so the figures reconcile. Other tax charges round to the nearest cent, half up. Per-unit landed costs show four decimal places.
Worked example
Illustrative Quebec example: a common taxable base of CAD 100 produces GST of CAD 5.00 and QST of CAD 9.98 after rounding, for CAD 114.98. The QST reference is 9.975%; it is not rounded to 10% before calculation. Nova Scotia’s HST reference is 14%, effective April 1, 2025.
What to confirm before using the result
This version assumes the federal and provincial taxes use the same base. It does not handle mixed exemptions, special product categories or historical rates. The applicable province is a place-of-supply decision, not necessarily the seller’s province. Confirm provincial rules before including freight or reducing the base for a coupon.
