How this calculation works
Add VAT: tax = net × rate / 100. Remove VAT: net = gross / (1 + rate / 100); VAT = gross − net.
Amounts use two decimal places. VAT extraction rounds the net price and uses the remainder as VAT so the figures reconcile. Other tax charges round to the nearest cent, half up. Per-unit landed costs show four decimal places.
Worked example
Illustrative example: at 20%, a gross amount of 120 contains 20 VAT and a net amount of 100. Subtracting 20% of 120 would give 96, which is not the correct reverse calculation.
What to confirm before using the result
Reverse VAT here means extracting VAT already included in a price. It is different from the reverse-charge tax mechanism. References cover EU national standard rates and UK standard VAT; special territories, reduced rates and exemptions need separate checks. A 0% calculation does not establish zero-rating eligibility.
